Jake Thistle Parents’ Lifelong Support Fuels American Idol Journey
March 10, 2026 — Paramus, N.J. Jake Thistle parents Greg and Jill Thistle have provided unwavering support for their 21-year-old son’s music career, driving him to gigs multiple times weekly during his middle and high school years as he now competes on season 24 of American Idol, advancing to the Top 30 after performing in the Ohana Round on March 9 at Disney’s Aulani resort in Hawaii.
Thistle, a Paramus native influenced by classic rock icons like Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne, debuted his original song “Sleep on Me” before family and judges during the latest round, following standout performances of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” in Nashville and Sam Fender’s “Seventeen Going Under” in Hollywood Week, according to NorthJersey.com.
Family Backbone
Jake Thistle parents, neither of whom are musicians—his mother Jill is an English teacher and father Greg works in communications—fostered his passion sparked at age 3 by the 2008 Super Bowl halftime show featuring Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, per NJArts.net.
“He’s always been super passionate about music. When he was 12, America’s Got Talent called and asked him to come on their show, and he said, ‘No, I want to wait until I’m an adult,’” Greg Thistle told New Jersey Monthly.
The Jake Thistle parents chauffeured him to three or four gigs weekly as a teen, enabling performances at venues like the Stone Pony and charity events for the American Cancer Society and others, as detailed in a 2016 NorthJersey.com profile.
“He’s learned a lot from the music experience to this point, and that’s good enough for us,” Greg Thistle said then.
Early Career and Education
By age 12, Jake Thistle was raising funds for charities like Rock the Dogs and performing at nursing homes. He self-recorded his debut album Down the Line during Covid, released his EP The Half Left Out in 2023 and latest LP Sleep on Me in February 2026. A Rutgers University graduate with dual majors in communications and journalism, Thistle balanced studies with weekend gigs, per Rutgers news.
Judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan praised his recent Hollywood Week show at Asbury Park’s Stone Pony legacy venues. Thistle expressed gratitude for New Jersey support, including from his Jake Thistle parents, amid fan voting ahead.
