Christina Aguilera Parents: Revelations of Abusive Childhood and Family Divorce
April 5, 2023 — Singer Christina Aguilera opened up about her Christina Aguilera parents, Fausto Wagner Xavier Aguilera and Shelly Loraine Kearns, describing a chaotic childhood marked by her father’s alleged physical and emotional abuse toward her mother, during an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
Aguilera, then age 42, explained how witnessing the abuse led her to become a protector for her mother from a young age. The family’s frequent moves due to Fausto Aguilera’s service as a U.S. Army sergeant—from New York to New Jersey, Texas, Japan and eventually Pennsylvania—exacerbated the instability. Her parents divorced in 1987 when Aguilera was about six, after which she, her mother and sister moved to her grandmother’s home in Rochester, Pennsylvania.
Revelations of Abuse
Aguilera recounted the cycles of violence, including late-night drives from New Jersey to Pittsburgh to escape. On the Army base in Sagamihara, Japan, thin walls allowed her to hear neighboring abuse.
“Trauma never leaves you. You just figure out ways to try and heal it, and to me it’s therapeutic to speak about it.”
She described the complexity of leaving abusive situations, involving shame, sweet-talking and eroded self-esteem.
“There was some back and forth. There’s always the tug of like, ‘I’m never gonna do it again.’ There’s sweet-talking involved.”
Coping Mechanisms and Lasting Impact
Singing provided escape; Aguilera sang The Sound of Music songs from her window in Japan for hope. The trauma fueled her purpose to empower the voiceless and shaped her protective parenting.
In an August 2024 Glamour interview, she reflected:
“I don’t know if I would be the singer or performer I am… had I not been through my childhood. It gave me a real purpose.”
SheKnows noted how Christina Aguilera parents influenced her resilience.
