Charlie Hunnam Parents: Actor Recalls Dad Questioning Sexuality After Queer as Folk Role

Oct. 3, 2025 — In a Variety interview promoting Netflix’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story, English actor Charlie Hunnam recounted how one of his Charlie Hunnam parents, his late father William “Billy” Hunnam, questioned his sexuality after his 1999 breakout role in Queer as Folk.

Hunnam, known for Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim, described his father, a scrap metal merchant from Newcastle upon Tyne, as “an incredibly tough scrap-metal merchant in a brutal industry” and “sort of a king in our city.”

“He asked if I was gay and if this was representative of the life I was living.”

The actor shared that his father “didn’t quite get it” at first but eventually came around.

Early Life with Charlie Hunnam Parents

Born April 10, 1980, in Newcastle upon Tyne, Hunnam is the son of William Hunnam (1952–2013) and Jane Bell Hunnam, a former ballet dancer and business owner. His Charlie Hunnam parents divorced when he was a toddler, after which Jane raised Hunnam and his older brother William as a single parent. Hunnam has praised his mother, saying she “did a very good job” of being a single parent.

At age 12, his mother remarried, and the family moved to Melmerby, Cumbria. Hunnam has two younger half-brothers, Oliver and Christian, on his mother’s side.

His father, who wanted Hunnam to take over the family scrap business, was disappointed by his acting ambitions.

“He wanted me to take over his business, and I just knew that I wouldn’t be able to survive in that world. Disappointing him was a wound I had to carry.”

Hunnam noted that his success in Hollywood, including Sons of Anarchy, helped heal that rift.

Father’s Passing and Legacy

William Hunnam passed away from cancer in 2013. The actor returned from Los Angeles to the UK following his father’s death, as reported in earlier coverage of Charlie Hunnam parents.

The recent reflections on his Charlie Hunnam parents surfaced amid promotion for Monster, where Hunnam plays serial killer Ed Gein. Coverage appeared in outlets including Out.com, Attitude, and PinkNews.

No major updates on Charlie Hunnam’s parents have emerged since the October 2025 interviews.
